Be in Love with What You Do, Even if You Don’t Love Every Minute of It!
I’m in love with my husband. I have been since the very first night I met him and standing beside a campfire he said, “You haven’t seen the last of me Kim Tucker.” Well that was 27 years ago and my belly still gets butterflies when I think of that moment. He proposed less than a week later and I’ve been in love ever since. However…… that doesn’t mean I’ve loved every minute of our 27 years together. He can get on my nerves, he can irritate me, he can piss me off and he can drive me nuts! (And I KNOW he could say the same about me!) But I still love him and am in love with him. Because when you really love someone, you’re able to weather those times when you’ve got to do something you DON’T love. I mean let’s face it, who loves being up with a sick kid til 3 AM or mopping up the floor after the dishwasher backed up or raking up 23 bags of leaves and yard clippings when it’s 102 degrees! But you can get through those things when you’re IN LOVE with your partner.
And that’s why I believe it’s so critically important you LOVE what you do. Because, again, let’s face it, no matter what ‘job’ or ‘business’ or ‘work’ you do in the world – there are going to parts that you’re not going to love. When I first started my jewelry business, it was shipping. Not only did I design and make the jewelry. And manage the website and orders and accounts – I also had to SHIP the product. I got to the point where I dreaded seeing another order because I knew that meant I was going to have to ship another box. Yikes! Talk about short circuiting my success! What energy was I putting out into the world? But I so deeply loved everything else about the business – I loved designing the jewelry and I loved thinking of the women who would wear my creations and I loved having something of my ‘own’ that I had started, so I could deal with shipping. Although it was the very first thing I hired out. I hired a college student to come 2 mornings a week for 3 hours and do all the shipping. For less than $50 a week, I had that one task covered and my sales started to skyrocket because I got rid of that negative energy.
So look at what you’re doing, hopefully something that you truly love to do, and the parts of it you don’t like – see if you can find a creative way to NOT have to do those. And watch how much more you can LOVE what you do! Now if I could only get my husband to empty the trash….
